2The Connections between Anne and Me

Will it be possible for human beings to learn a bunch of life lessons within days? Not until I read through the book Anne of Avonlea did I know that such a bargain does exist. In the book, different aspects of life lessons beyond my age were displayed. Distinct types of parent-children connections, multiple perspectives toward marriage, and all means of educational values exhibited through the characters etc..., are all the precious experiences yet down-to-earth issues that could happen in life. As a result, reading this lovely book is actually more like being acquainted with a friend, or specifically, a mentor. As a friend, you might find yourself uncovering various beautiful moments in life; while as a reader, you might find yourself rested assured to share the intimate events with the characters and start to imagine how they would reflect on your problems. At the same time, you would also taste the sadness and happiness along with them....

Among all the adventurous journeys illustrated in the book, the ones that touch deeply my heart deeply are the parts regarding relationships. In the story, Anne had finished her education in Queens and returned to Avonlea to realize her dream of becoming a teacher. In her class, she discovered that one of her pupils, Paul Irving, possesses a sweet soul that contains the exact imagination and gentleness as she does. As a consequence, they quickly became friends despite their age gap. Furthermore, romantic poems and lovely imaginations filled up their conversations, as if they were living in a whole new world, sharing unique ideas that wouldn’t be fully understood by others. Another special relationship that Anne bonds with is Davy Keith, the brother of the twins. According to the description in the book, Davy is the definition of a naughty boy in modern days. For instance, he would put a toad under Marilla’s pillow just to see her being horrified; he would question where God actually is and whether He is really helping people; he would also tell lies to see ***s getting anxious about Dora’s suddenly disappearance (his well behaved twin sister), while the truth is that he had locked her in a cabin. All the wilderness demonstrated in the incidents made Davy a problematic child in everyone’s eyes. Nonetheless, the avidity for knowledge actually made Anne partial to him . In fact, she even loves Davy more than Dora, for she had once said, 「we always love best the people who need us. Davy needs us badly.」 As a result, every time Davy is in trouble, Anne would be the best mentor to teach him how a gentlemen would be like and how others would feel, instead of treating him brutally that will hurt him physically or worse, taking away his opportunity of becoming a better man.

When I read through these pieces of their special bond, it reminds me of the feeling of being accepted. Once, there was a time in my life that I couldn’t fully blend in people around me. Girls were so interested in speaking ill of others, while I prefer to talk about something informative or positive; boys acted like they had never learned any manner, teasing anyone who wouldn’t fight back and breaking rules so often like it had never existed. During that period of time, I struggled to cope with the bombarding gossips and the unfriendly ambiance. However, afraid of being crowded out, the only thing I did was pretending that I had a great interest in getting involved. Until one day, the fortune befell me. Recalling the very first time I met my best friend, I have the most vivid image appearing in the archive of my mind when we were grouped together to do homework. In order to perform the best of ourselves, we communicated aggressively. Not long after had we became friends and confided in each other about the fake happiness we had undergone. Granted this opportunity, we decided to leave the rest and reveal the true self of who we are despite the critical remarks. Frankly speaking, it wasn’t an easy process to weather. Nevertheless, friendship doubles the joy and eases the pain; by supporting each other, we have overcome all the hostile comments. What’s more, we have at the same time became best friends, remaining steady friendship to this day.
From my point of view, her firm and positive attitude in trying her very best to love every individual is an amazing personal trait that is rarely seen in both late 1800s and nowadays. As a teacher, her strong will to help the innocent that were stuck in the same situation as she had once done makes herself a lovely one; as a resident in Avonlea, her adventurous yet imaginative personality has huge influence on the community. By building connections with every individual, she somehow changes the conservative ideas hidden in the villagers’ mind; by starting the 「Avonlea Village Improvement Society」 (an organization Anne started with her friends that aims to improve the community from all aspects) she and her friends gradually transform the environment. On both mental and physical aspects, Anne does something extraordinary that people won’t forget. While as a reader, I am inspired by her liberal mindset. She teaches me not to judge people just because they are different, nor should we change our opinion simply because it’s against the majority. In fact, insisting on what we believe may eventually be the best policy. What’s more, seeing her trying the very best to prepare for everything is something inspirational as well. Through watching her make every effort to fulfill a task motivates me to act the same way.

In conclusion, Anne of Avonlea is definitely a great book that is worth reading again and again. The multiple life lessons involved in the book serve as a perfect mentor to guide me when I feel perplexed. Making friends with the protagonist--Anne, I am hugely inspired by her, and thus hope to be as influential as she is .
