2Life lessons in a cancer girl’s story

「Are you content with your life?」 If someone asks me this question, my answer is definitely positive.

Hazel's and Augustus’s stories of suffering from diseases reminded me of my own experience of dealing with illnesses. In the story, Hazel's parents rushed her to the hospital before dawn because she had a sudden ache in her head, which turned out to be caused by hypoxia. In another case, Hazel went to Augustus’s assistance because he was having trouble with his medical equipment. These incidents brought my memory back to my infancy, when my parents rushed me to the emergency room at midnight due to a sudden onset of asthma. Thanks to all the doctors, Hazel, Augustus, and I survived these nasty illnesses.

While identified with their hardships, I was also shocked by the cruel joke played on Hazel and Augustus. Hazel and Augustus are undoubtedly important partners for each other. Unfortunately, as Augustus’s cancer worsened, he passed away later on and Hazel forever lost her dearest companion. In contrast, my parents were always by my side and provided practical as well as mental support when I was fighting against asthma or COVID-19. It is hard to imagine how devastated Hazel must have been to lose a significant person who had been through so much with her. It's no doubt a heart-breaking blow!

Compared with the adversities faced by Hazel and Augustus, the difficulties in my life that I once considered hard are not worth mentioning. Though tortured by cancer, they never gave up enjoying their lives to the fullest. This made me realize that there is no reason for us to not be content with our lives. Accidents may happen occasionally, but our lives are much smoother than Hazel's under most circumstances. Ironically, some people are so fortunate that they have never gotten sick or seriously injured, yet they still consider their lives terrible. If they had a chance to learn about Hazel’s and Augustus’s stories, I bet they would be regretful about not cherishing what they have. After all, compared with the pain and frustrations Hazel and Augustus have to deal with, living our lives freely is already our biggest happiness, isn't it?

Apart from inspiring me to be content with my life, Hazel teaches me two other lessons. First, under no circumstances should one lock himself or herself and lose communication with the world. Since we were little, we have been taught to be open-minded and explore the world as much as possible. Even though life might give us frustrations, it still has magnificent moments to offer, and we must make the most out of it to experience such moments. In the story, Hazel wasn't willing to go to the Support Group meeting at first, but she gave in eventually due to her mother’s words, 「You deserve a life.」 Surprisingly, it was at the meeting that she came across Augustus, and their beautiful love story started. As Auguste Rodin says, 「Beauty is everywhere. it is not that she is lacking to our eye, but our eyes which fail to perceive her.」 If Hazel had chosen not to explore the world and attend the meeting, she wouldn't have met Augustus, not to mention experiencing all the beauty that comes along with him.

The other lesson is that we should never allow difficulties to shatter our dreams. When we find it difficult to achieve our aspirations, sharing those aspirations with others can be a solution. Others can then give us assistance as much as they can. With others’ help, fulfilling our desires is no longer impossible. Hazel and Augustus’s trip to Amsterdam perfectly manifests this idea. At first, Hazel thought the trip would fail, but thanks to 「the Genies」, her parents, Lidewij, and Dr. Maria, their journey turned out to be successful and memorable. As is said in the book, 「The world is not a wish-granting factory.」 Indeed, not all wishes in the world can be realized, but with our determination and others’ assistance, it is never impossible to accomplish our goals.

In conclusion, this book has inspired me in multiple ways. Life can be tough sometimes, but we should always try to look on the bright side and hold an enthusiastic attitude toward it, cherish every moment, and live our life to the fullest. At the same time, connect with the people around us and make every endeavor to make our dreams come true. By doing so, our life will be colorful no matter what hardships stand in our way.
